Space Requests & Policy

Students may begin to request reservations for the fall 2022 semester beginning on Monday, August 22, 2022.

Please note that the process differs for students in different schools/programs. See the following sections for specific protocols for each school/program.

Mannes School of Music & School of Jazz and Contemporary Music Students

For use of music classrooms and practice rooms in Arnhold Hall.

Full-time degree students at Mannes and Jazz & Contemporary Music may reserve rooms to practice. Only currently enrolled students can reserve space on campus and no guests are permitted.

All classrooms and practice rooms in Arnhold Hall (55 West 13th Street), floors: Mezz, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

  • Students may reserve practice rooms and classrooms for up to 8 hours, daily, with the hours organized into the following zones/limits:
  • Monday-Friday and Sunday
    • 8am-11am ET: 2 hours maximum
    • 11am-9pm ET: 2 hours maximum
    • 9pm ET-11pm ET: 2 hours maximum
  • Saturday
    • Floors 3, 4 & 7 are available starting at 6pm ET for student practice, following normal daily rules.
    • Floors Mezz, 5 & 6 are available to students during the normal operating hours, following normal daily rules.
  • Reservations may be created up to 36 hours in advance.
  • In order to cancel a reservation, you must cancel it more than 2 hours before it begins.
  • Reservations are available only on the hour. (i.e. not at 1:30, 2:15, 3:45, etc.) and end before the top of the next hour. In practice rooms: your practice reservation begins at the top of the hour and you should exit the space 5 minutes before the top of the hour so the next occupant may begin at the top of the hour.
  • In classrooms: your practice reservation begins at the top of the hour. Students are required to leave a classroom in its default classroom configuration, straightening out the seats as necessary (see the image posted on the wall of each classroom). You should begin straightening up the room and packing away your items by 10 minutes before the top of the hour and exit at least 5 minutes before the top of the hour. This will allow the next class to begin on time.
  • If you are more than 10 minutes late to your reservation the room is considered “open” and anyone may use the room. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late to your reservation and someone else is using the room, you may not kick them out. If you are late to a 2 hour reservation, you forfeit the first hour and may return at the top of the second hour to claim the room. Faculty reservations are not subject to late rules. If a faculty member is late to a lesson/class/coaching, they may still claim the room. However, faculty may not claim a room without a reservation.
  • You may not reserve an empty room by placing your personal items in it. For example, pianists may not reserve a room by simply leaving their music on the piano.
  • We recommend you do not leave valuables unattended in a practice room. Lost and found is located at the security desk as you first walk into the building.
  • The only authorized teaching on campus is by faculty for registered students. Students are not allowed to use their practice time to teach privately.
  • No smoking or vaping.
  • Do not place food or beverages upon the pianos, amps, drums or the audio cabinets. Do not leave trash in the pianos.
  • Windows must remain closed at all times.
  • Do not obstruct the windows of classrooms or practice rooms. For example, do not cover the door window with a coat, scarf, or paper towel.

Mannes Chamber Groups, which are part of the Chamber Music Program (for credit), are allowed 2 hours of rehearsal time per week. Once you are assigned to a group, please email chambermusic@newschool.edu to get your username and next steps (to be shared among the group).

Building hours are announced on The New School’s building hours page. Please be aware of the opening and closing times. IMPORTANT: Availability in coparooms does not guarantee the building will be open. Please be aware of the building schedule, especially during breaks and holidays.

Anyone with TNS credentials may log into coparooms and see the schedule with a view-only account; the available rooms will be blocked out with red hash lines. A few days before school starts in the fall, enrollment lists are pulled from the computer and imported into coparooms and given booking rights. There are always a handful of students who aren’t captured at that point, i.e. registered late, started in the spring, had a hold, etc. These students need to email coparooms@newschool.edu to be given booking access manually.

Students should make daily reservations via https://coparooms.newschool.edu; however, we realize sometimes there are special requests/issues. Please contact coparooms@newschool.edu if you need help.
